Lean and BIM PhD Summer Schools

For many years, the IGLC has provided doctoral students around the world a special opportunity to present their research and get feedback from a panel of experts in a very open, yet challenging forum. The LC3 2017 PhD summer school will be unique since it will explore the synergy between two themes of major interest in the built environment – those of Lean Construction and Building Information Modelling.

Trimble is kindly sponsoring the summer school registration costs for 70 students to give them the opportunity to present their work and receive feedback – 25 for the Lean Summer School and 25 for the BIM summer school, and 20 for the combined theme of Lean and BIM. Out of the 70 students, 40 students will get the opportunity to present their work in the summer school – 15 for the Lean Summer School, 15 for the BIM summer school, and 10 for the combined theme of Lean and BIM. The event will offer the students an opportunity to i) get detailed feedback on their research from academics and practitioners; ii) network with likeminded researchers working on similar topics, and iii) find potential new themes for future research.

The summer school is a long running tradition of the IGLC and one that students have come to appreciate highly as it provides critical yet constructive feedback that helps sharpen their research. In 2017, for the first time, the summer school will be extended to the area of computing in construction. Each student will get 15 minutes to present their work in a structured way, followed by 30 minutes of discussion. Help will be at hand for those who would like to fine-tune their research methods or refine their problem statement. In addition, there will be more peer-to-peer sessions organised this year. More details about this will follow soon.

In addition to those students presenting their work, there will also be an opportunity for eligible students to attend the event and be the part of the discussion, either as early stage researchers or experienced ones who have already been to a summer school already.

All postgraduate students are eligible to apply, either to present their work or to attend the summer school as observers. In order to be accepted, all students (presenters and observers) should apply using the application form. The number of places will be limited and applicants will be shortlisted by the expert panel.

Registration for the Summer School

Applications should be sent latest by 15th of March to the respective Deans of the summer schools:

  • Prof. Lucio Soibelman for the BIM summer school ([email protected])
  • Dr. Bhargav Dave for the Lean summer school ([email protected])

If you are applying to the combined Lean and BIM theme, please send your application to both deans. The deans will select the students in their respective themes and notify them, providing instructions for presentation. For students selected to present their work, the summer school is free-of-charge (excluding accommodation and travel costs). Approved observers will be asked to pay a minimal registration fee to cover direct costs including learning materials, refreshments and meals.
